Nation of Makers Covid Reopen Calls, each Weds @6pmCST

Would like to invite interested members, especially Reopen Team Members, to attend a weekly Makerspace Reopen call that happens each Weds at 7ET/6CT. Link here: [https://meet.jit.si/RelaunchPostcovid] Everybody’s friendly on the call and you’re welcome to attend, listen and share ideas.

It’s makerspaces from around the country, weighing on reopen challenges and innovations.
Examples:
–Fresno won’t be allowed to re-open until after the summer.
–Dallas thinking about re-open
–We got to tell ppl about Skedda, which others also have used and like
–Different spaces are doing different scheduling mechanisms
–Some spaces are taking up PPE production and other projects to make money as they aren’t able to teach classes
If you do attend, please reportback here to the group!

Last week’s Call, May 20

  • Everybody’s working on access control and social distancing.
  • S-- in C–, CA recorded 50 videos during Covid for makeitathome.net
*J–, MakerDepot - New Jersey. Working with Emergency Managers.
*Maui Makers - “go kits” can’t bring in kids to the space, but can bring rocket kits, etc, out to events. Space keeps on its feet this way.
  • C-- - Hack Pittsburg - 3600 sq ft - scheduled opening, doing 1 person in each section
  • Fresno Ideaworks (J–) County has said community makerspaces are closed through Sept. They survive financially via 40% classes, 40% membership, 20% gifts, hoping to up the gifts. PPE brought in $7000, lost 15% of membership. https://fresnoideaworks.wildapricot.org/
  • J-- (NoM) suggests supplementing income by working with local Emergency Management folks @drew
-Do they want to be able to access your equipment if they need to make stuff quickly? (Covid and otherwise) Create Memorandum of Understanding
-start looking at CARES ACT money going to governments, see how makerspace might be able to support and get involved, uniquely positioned to help with PPE production. https://home.treasury.gov/policy-issues/cares
-See FEMA site, space could find extra income if you see what they are needing for emergency response

*one makerspace: 6 volunteers, 130 members. Hard to reopen with so few involved. Working on upping # of volunteers
*Nation of Makers conference is coming up - $150 to attend, online - June 3-6

Just want to tickle any @makers who’d like to attend this meeting, happening in 15 minutes – it is a group of makers across the country who are working on innovative ways to keep growing and building community at this time of Covid. @dannym attended last week and will be posting on this thread the learning and ideas he picked up. Includes innovative ways that spaces are making money and prioritizing safety at this time.

Hi, Hackers, in case you’re interested in hanging out on this call tonight with Nation of Makers at 6pm, it should be good, I’ll go if I can – @jpklippert @Caroline @RDChilders @dannym @nightinlight @wdnatx @jharmn @kingkeyan @MMcATX

Tonight, they’re talking about Covid response and grant-writing for spaces. Each week, people share what they’re working on, new projects and approaches, and how things are going. Don’t feel like you have to speak for the space, you can share some of our Covid innovations or projects, or you can just listen and report back. It would be great if some of us could attend each week, though I know it would be tough for one person to attend each week.

One thing they mentioned was this:

via GetusPPE https://getusppe.org/

and this:

and that there are organizations like ours finding grants and small govt contracts right now, potentially around making PPE.

Thank you,
Kye

Some info on the Nation of Makers call this week (6pm tonight) and for coming weeks!

I try to attend every week but often cannot – please do jump on the call if you are interested in helping ATXHS to connect with ideas other makerspaces are implementing to innovate and pull in new resources at a time where innovation is really key to our survival. You don’t have to speak for the space, feel free to just listen and report back if that’s where you’re comfortable.
